The Debate at the Centre

The upcoming elections once again dominate the national stage. Beyond dates and deadlines, the bigger concern is how to launch the election and what type of system should be followed. These are not just technical questions; they go to the heart of legitimacy, inclusivity, and the democratic future of our country.

The Dilemma: Ideals vs. Reality

Citizens yearn for one person, one vote—the universal standard of democracy. Yet the state struggles with insecurity, political divisions, and logistical constraints. As a result, past elections have been shaped by indirect systems and clan-based negotiations that leave ordinary people excluded. The challenge is bridging the gap between democratic ideals and on-the-ground realities.

Who Decides the Rules?

Launching a credible election depends on clarity. Who sets the rules? Who organizes the process? Without an empowered and trusted electoral body, the system risks collapse. Trust between federal and regional leaders is fragile, and unless consensus is reached, elections may deepen divisions instead of uniting the nation.

Types of Elections on the Table

Some leaders argue that indirect elections remain the only “realistic” option. Others insist that universal suffrage must finally be implemented. Indirect systems may offer short-term stability but risk cementing elitism and alienating the youth majority. Direct elections, though more complex, are the surest path to legitimacy and ownership by the people.

The Promise of One Man, One Vote

The principle of universal suffrage is not just a mechanism—it is a symbol of equality and fairness. For years, it has been the aspiration of citizens and a repeated commitment by leaders. Its realization would mark a turning point, granting every individual an equal say in shaping the nation’s destiny.

Steps Toward Universal Suffrage

Even if full nationwide direct elections are not immediately feasible, gradual steps can be taken:

  • Voter registration rolled out region by region.
  • Civic education campaigns to prepare and inform citizens.
  • Independent oversight bodies to ensure transparency and fairness.

This roadmap would show progress, build confidence, and prevent repeated cycles of deadlock.

A Critical Opportunity

The upcoming elections are more than political bargaining—they are a chance to reset our democratic foundation. By addressing how and what type of election will be held, leaders can deliver clarity and fairness. Ultimately, the aspiration of one man, one vote must guide every decision, not as a slogan but as a commitment to equality, legitimacy, and shared national progress.
