Mogadishu – The United Nations Political Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) has praised the peaceful and orderly conduct of the Banadir district local council elections held on Thursday, describing the vote as an important step toward strengthening democratic processes in Somalia.

In a statement published on X, the UN mission welcomed the conclusion of the voting process without any reported security incidents. It emphasized the need to further advance inclusive, transparent, and participatory electoral processes across the country, while urging Somali leaders to continue working toward broad political consensus to shape Somalia’s future governance framework.

UNSOM noted that the calm and orderly completion of the Banadir elections is encouraging, stressing that continued dialogue among political actors remains essential for achieving long-term stability and democratic consolidation.

Aligning with the United Nations’ assessment, the European Union Ambassador to Somalia, Francesca Di Mauro, described the Mogadishu elections as “a positive step toward broader civic participation.” In a brief statement shared on her official account, she highlighted the importance of effective engagement among all political stakeholders in the coming phase and underscored the role of civil society perspectives in assessing the electoral process. She reaffirmed the European Union’s continued support for democratic governance in Somalia.
