Mogadishu (SPT)– Somalia’s newly appointed Chief of the Somali National Army (SNA), General Ibrahim Mohamed Mahmoud, formally assumed his duties on Tuesday following a handover ceremony at the Ministry of Defence in Mogadishu.

The event was attended by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, senior government officials, and international partners. Speaking at the ceremony, the prime minister described General Mahmoud as a seasoned officer with extensive experience within the SNA, noting that he has held several senior command positions during his career.

Barre said the appointment is expected to bring renewed impetus to military operations against Al-Shabaab, as the government continues its campaign to weaken the group’s operational capabilities and restore security across the country.

The Somali government appointed General Ibrahim Mohamed Mahmoud as army chief on January 29, 2026, replacing Major General Odowa Yusuf Rage, who was relieved of his post as part of a broader leadership reshuffle within the security sector.

The leadership change reflects Mogadishu’s ongoing efforts to recalibrate its security strategy amid a protracted fight against Al-Shabaab. Appointing a senior officer with institutional experience suggests a preference for continuity combined with operational recalibration, rather than a wholesale shift in doctrine.

The appointment comes as Somalia intensifies coordination with regional allies and international partners, while facing persistent security challenges in both urban centers and rural areas. Changes at the top of the military command are often closely watched as indicators of the government’s confidence in its counterinsurgency approach and civil–military relations.

By formally installing a new army chief, the Somali government has signaled its intent to reinforce command effectiveness and sustain pressure on Al-Shabaab, positioning the security sector as a central pillar of its broader stabilization agenda.
