Garowe – The Puntland regional administration has released details regarding the arrest of approximately 50 foreign nationals during its military operations against ISIS militants in the mountainous areas of the Bari region. The disclosure comes as part of efforts to emphasize the transnational nature of the security threat facing the region.

Official information indicates that nearly half of those detained are Ethiopian nationals, while others reportedly originate from Morocco, Yemen, Tanzania, as well as smaller numbers from Türkiye, Saudi Arabia, and Syria. Puntland officials say this composition reflects the broader regional and international networks supporting militant activity in the area.

Since late 2024, Puntland has sustained military pressure on ISIS positions in the Bari mountains, citing measurable gains in disrupting militant operations. However, authorities acknowledge that the campaign is ongoing, with continued implications for regional stability and cross-border security cooperation.

Security analysts note that the arrests demonstrate Puntland’s commitment to counterterrorism and regional cooperation, sending a clear message to both domestic and foreign actors that the state remains vigilant against threats to its sovereignty and the safety of local communities.
