Garowe – Prominent Somali politician Ali Haji Warsame has called on Puntland’s leadership to clearly articulate their position regarding Israel’s recognition of the self-declared Somaliland administration, which he described as a direct challenge to Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial unity.
In remarks shared on social media platform X, Warsame argued that Puntland leaders cannot seek senior national leadership roles while remaining silent on actions that undermine the unity of the Somali state. He emphasized that leadership at both regional and federal levels carries an obligation to defend national interests beyond political rivalries.
Warsame further stated that disagreements between Puntland and the Federal Government should not be used as justification for silence in the face of external violations of Somalia’s sovereignty. While internal disputes can be addressed through political dialogue, he stressed that national unity must remain a red line that transcends political differences.
He also warned that silence from influential regional leaders risks sending mixed signals to the international community at a critical moment. According to Warsame, a unified and clear national position is essential to protecting Somalia’s territorial integrity and reinforcing its standing in diplomatic and political engagements.
The remarks come amid broader national debate, as federal authorities and several federal member states have openly rejected Israel’s recognition of Somaliland, while the absence of public statements from some regional leaders has drawn increasing public and political scrutiny.
