MOGADISHU — The Federal Parliament of Somalia has formally approved a law creating the National Meteorological and Climate Services Agency, marking a significant strategic achievement in the country’s efforts to respond to climate change and improve disaster preparedness.

Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Gen. Bashir Mohamed Jama, praised the House of the People for passing the law, highlighting the technical support provided by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) during the drafting process. He also acknowledged the pivotal role of Dr. Guleid Abdiqadir Artan, Somalia’s Permanent Representative to the WMO, in facilitating the approval.

The newly established agency will serve as Somalia’s central authority for weather forecasting, climate monitoring, and the provision of scientific data to inform evidence-based development planning.

The agency is expected to play a key role in supporting the livelihoods of farmers, pastoralists, and fishers, helping communities respond effectively to climate challenges. Minister Bashir reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to implementing the law efficiently, transparently, and promptly, ensuring the agency serves national interests and contributes to improving the quality of life for Somali citizens.
