Lower Juba – Members of the Al-Shabaab militant group launched a coordinated attack early Tuesday on a military base operated by Jubbaland security forces in the town of Buurgaabo, in Somalia’s Lower Juba region, according to local sources.
The assault reportedly began with explosions before escalating into direct clashes between the attackers and Jubbaland forces. Buurgaabo is located near the Somalia–Kenya border and lies close to the coastal town of Ras Kamboni, an area of strategic and security significance.
Preliminary reports indicate that the fighting resulted in casualties on both sides, including fatalities and injuries, although no official figures have been confirmed. Witnesses in the area said heavy weapons fire continued to be heard on the outskirts of the town hours after the attack began, suggesting that the security situation remained volatile.
As of the time of reporting, neither the Jubbaland administration nor the Federal Government of Somalia has issued an official statement regarding the attack or the extent of the losses. The incident comes amid ongoing security operations against Al-Shabaab in southern Somalia, where the group continues to target military positions despite sustained counterterrorism efforts.
