Somali Policy Talk (SPT) > Local News > Egypt Considers Rapid Military Deployment to Somalia Amid Rising Regional Tensions

Cairo – Egypt is considering plans to deploy rapid military forces to Somalia, according to a report published by The National, citing informed sources, amid growing geopolitical tensions in the Horn of Africa.

The move comes as Cairo closely follows regional developments, particularly concerns linked to what was described as an alleged Israeli recognition of Somaliland, which Egypt views as a direct threat to its strategic interests and national security.

Sources indicated that Egypt is studying the possibility of sending thousands of soldiers and officers to Somalia to support security operations and contribute to efforts against Al-Shabaab, a step that could strengthen Somalia’s security architecture at a time of increasing regional uncertainty.

Egypt has also emphasized the strategic importance of protecting the Red Sea, a vital global shipping route, with any potential military deployment seen as part of broader efforts to safeguard international maritime navigation and maintain stability around the Bab al-Mandab Strait.

According to the report, Cairo is additionally considering the establishment of frameworks for joint military cooperation, potentially including coordination bases, aimed at addressing emerging security threats and securing key maritime corridors in the region.

Security analysts quoted by The National said that developments related to Somaliland carry implications beyond politics, extending into broader military and security considerations at the regional level.

One analyst warned that an increased foreign military presence in northern Somalia could affect existing regional balances, including sensitive issues related to long-standing security and water disputes in the Horn of Africa.

The report noted that Egypt has consistently reaffirmed its support for Somalia’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, stressing that any actions undermining stability in the Horn of Africa could have repercussions beyond the region.

No official comment has yet been issued by either the Egyptian government or Somali authorities to confirm or deny the details of the report, as regional observers continue to monitor the situation closely amid shifting security dynamics in the Horn of Africa.
