Somali Policy Talk (SPT) > Local News > Member of Sana’a Shura Council: We Are Ready to Confront Any Israeli Presence on Somali Territory

Mogadishu – A member of the Yemeni Shura Council, Major General Abdullah Al-Jafri, stated that the recent statement by Houthi leader Abdul-Malik Al-Houthi was a direct response to Israel’s announcement recognizing Somaliland as an independent state. He warned that foreign powers are plotting to fragment the region with the support of some countries.

Al-Jafri emphasized that any Israeli presence in Somaliland is considered a military threat and reaffirmed Yemen’s commitment to supporting Somalia’s unity, security, and stability. He stressed the importance of regional and national leadership to counter foreign interference, which could destabilize Somalia and the Horn of Africa.

Al-Jafri highlighted that the Yemeni military is prepared to respond strategically to threats, citing advanced capabilities including missile forces, drones, and naval units. He reiterated Yemen’s readiness to confront any Israeli-American plans, including those aimed at dominating regional resources, and reaffirmed support for both Somalia and Palestine.

The statement comes after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu formally recognized Somaliland as a sovereign entity, a move rejected by 21 countries including Egypt, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Iran. Observers note that while Somaliland has functioned autonomously since 1991, it has not received international recognition as a separate state, and the Somali Federal Government continues to control Mogadishu and other areas.
