New York – The Federal Republic of Somalia officially assumed, on Wednesday, the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council for the month of January, succeeding the Republic of Slovenia.

Somalia’s assumption of the Security Council presidency reflects the country’s growing diplomatic engagement and renewed international standing. During its presidency, Somalia is expected to prioritize issues related to peace, security, conflict prevention, and stability, particularly in Africa and the wider Horn of Africa region.

Somalia’s leadership of the Security Council is viewed as a significant milestone that highlights the country’s expanding role on the international diplomatic stage, amid ongoing efforts to strengthen state institutions and contribute to global peace and security.

This development comes days after a tense exchange at the Security Council between the representatives of Somalia and Israel following Israel’s announcement recognizing the so-called Somaliland. The Israeli move was widely condemned at both regional and international levels, and the Security Council reaffirmed its respect for Somalia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political independence.
