Somali Policy Talk (SPT) > Local News > Djibouti Closes Somaliland Office Operating in Its Territory

Djibouti – Authorities in the Republic of Djibouti have closed an office operated by the Somaliland administration that had been functioning within Djiboutian territory, according to official sources familiar with the decision.

The move is widely viewed as a reaffirmation of Djibouti’s long-standing position in support of the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia, in line with international law and regional agreements.

Djibouti has consistently rejected any actions that could be interpreted as legitimizing Somaliland’s unilateral claim of independence, maintaining that Somalia’s territorial integrity remains inviolable and must be respected by all regional and international actors.

The Somaliland office in Djibouti is believed to have been operating since around 2012, functioning as an informal liaison presence rather than a recognized diplomatic mission. Despite its existence, Djibouti has consistently upheld its official position in support of Somalia’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.

Political observers note that the decision sends a clear diplomatic signal amid heightened regional tensions, underscoring Djibouti’s alignment with Somalia’s federal government and its opposition to unilateral measures that risk destabilizing the Horn of Africa.
