Somali Policy Talk (SPT) > Local News > President Hassan Sheikh Holds Urgent Diplomatic Consultations with Regional Leaders to Defend Somalia’s Unity

Mogadishu – The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, held urgent diplomatic phone consultations with the President of the Republic of Djibouti and Chairperson of IGAD, Ismail Omar Guelleh; the President of Kenya and Chairperson of the East African Community (EAC), William Ruto; the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan; and the President of Uganda, Yoweri Museveni.

The discussions focused on what Somali authorities described as an unlawful action by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that constitutes a violation of the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national unity of the Federal Republic of Somalia. The move was highlighted as a serious threat to regional stability and security, and as being in direct contradiction with international law and established global norms.

Regional leaders who spoke with the President expressed strong and unanimous support for Somalia’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity. They emphasized that any recognition of territory belonging to a sovereign UN member state represents a clear violation of the United Nations Charter, the African Union principle of territorial integrity, and the rules governing international relations.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud continues to engage world leaders and international partners to strengthen legal, diplomatic, and political measures across all international platforms, in defense of Somalia’s unity, independence, and national sovereignty.
