New York – The United Nations Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution on Tuesday reaffirming its support for Somalia’s security transition by extending the mandate of the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) through the end of 2026.

The resolution authorizes the continued deployment of 11,826 AUSSOM personnel, including 680 police officers, and extends United Nations logistical support to the mission. However, Council members acknowledged persistent funding shortfalls and mandated a comprehensive review of UN assistance to ensure long-term sustainability and effectiveness.

As part of the decision, the Security Council also unanimously endorsed the termination of all operations of the United Nations Transitional Assistance Mission in Somalia by October 31, 2026, marking another step toward Somalia assuming full responsibility for its security.

The resolution, numbered 2809, renews sanctions against Al-Shabaab, reaffirming the Council’s commitment to weakening the armed group and supporting Somalia’s counterterrorism efforts. Council members commended the sacrifices made by African Union forces and Somali security forces in pursuit of national stability.

From a policy perspective, the vote underscores sustained international commitment to Somalia’s peace and security agenda, while highlighting the importance of predictable and adequate financing to ensure the success of the African Union mission and Somalia’s long-term stabilization process
