Somali Policy Talk (SPT) > Local News > Somali President Signals Openness to Dialogue and Compromise with Opposition

Mogadishu – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud stated on Saturday that the Federal Government remains open to dialogue and compromise with opposition leaders, as the opposition-led Somalia’s Future Council conference continues in Kismayo.

Speaking in Mogadishu, President Hassan Sheikh said the Kismayo meeting should produce constructive ideas that the government and the Somali public can engage with and negotiate.

“I say to our brothers in Kismayo: if you meet and reach an agreement, present something the Somali people can understand,” the president said. “We are not preventing you from going to Kismayo, nor are we closing airports. Present proposals that the Somali people can accept. We are ready for compromise.”

The president revealed that political discussions between the government and opposition figures have been ongoing for the past two months, focusing on what he described as critical national issues. He emphasized that mutual acceptance is more important than rigid positions, warning against remaining trapped in a prolonged political deadlock.

President Hassan Sheikh noted that while some politicians have accepted the government’s positions and others have rejected them, issues where consensus has been reached have been submitted to the Federal Parliament for legal review and implementation.

From a policy perspective, the remarks signal a willingness by the federal leadership to de-escalate political tensions through negotiation, while placing responsibility on opposition groups to present clear and broadly acceptable proposals.
