Somali Policy Talk (SPT) > Local News > Northeast Somalia Administration Accuses Puntland of Attacking Buu’ame District amid Rising Tensions

Authorities in northeastern Somalia have accused Puntland forces of launching an attack on the disputed Buu’ame district, as political and security tensions continue to rise in the region. The incident highlights renewed friction between Puntland and neighboring local administrations over governance and territorial claims.

Officials from the northeastern Somali administration reported that armed units linked to Puntland carried out an assault earlier this week on security positions near Buu’ame, a district claimed by both Puntland and the neighboring Sool region. The administration denounced the attack as an “unprovoked aggression,” calling on the Federal Government of Somalia to take swift action to prevent the situation from escalating further.

Puntland authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the accusations. However, sources in Garowe suggest that Puntland’s forces were conducting a security operation aimed at stabilizing areas threatened by local militia activity. The latest confrontation adds to a series of incidents that have strained relations between Puntland and neighboring regions, raising fears of renewed conflict in northern Somalia and testing Mogadishu’s ability to mediate internal disputes.
